Prior to entering law firms, Finch worked for Milwaukee's "Evening Wisconsin" newspaper. Thereafter, Finch was employed at the law firm of Judge Abram D. Smith and Henry L. Palmer. Around 1853, Finch moved to Janesville, where he became a part of the law firm Finch and Lynde. After, Finch was accepted into the partnership, the company's name
