A native of Chicago, Arnold attended the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, The Hyde Park Art Center, Roosevelt University and the Art Institute of Chicago. Thereafter, Arnold enlisted in the Army and served in Korea. In 1969, he was hired as an assistant professor of painting at Rockford College.
