Van Ness Avenue bread line in the foreground." Period Paper has obtained a scarce collection of original images from the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. On April 18, 1906, shortly after 5: 00 a. m. an earthquake, measuring 7. 8 on the Richter Scale, struck San Francisco and the outlying area. The damage from the quake was magnified by the subsequent fires which broke out and burned wildly for days.
